Nothing beats the classic combination of weed and movies. From the ironic to the comedic – maybe stay away from horror – the Netflix cue is endless. Kick back with some friends and enjoy these classic pot-centric movies.

Reefer Madness (1936)

While a ‘30s movie may not top your Netflix cue, Reefer Madness is one of the first movies focused on cannabis. Although originally created to deter people from smoking marijuana, this film is an ironic watch for a night of smoking.

According to Leafly, Keith Stroup, founder of the National Organization for the Reform of Marijuana Laws (NORML) s responsible for introducing this movie to stoners in 1971. Stroup screened the movie ironically as a pro-pot rally and later paired it with Martian Space, a sci-fi thriller.

Up in Smoke (1978)

Iconic stoner duo, Cheech Marin and Tommy Chong, made their mark on the cinema world with this hit film. Up in Smoke follows Anthony Stoner (Tommy Chong) as he meets up with Pedro de Pacas (Cheech Marin). The duo get caught for marijuana, released from jail and eventually compete in a rock band concert, every stoner’s dream. Two years later, Cheech and Chong released Cheech & Chong’s Next Movie (1980) to similar acclaim.

Dazed and Confused (1993)

Most people get into cannabis culture during college so this coming-of-age film is the perfect fit in any stoner’s repertoire. Set in 1976, the film includes all the classic teenage-movie components – college life, beer, hot girls, and plenty of weed.

Bonus points if you pair the film with Ben and Jerry’s Hazed and Confused ice cream, inspired by the film. Snack on this chocolate and hazelnut ice creams with fudge chips and a hazelnut fudge core for maximum viewing pleasure.

Dude, Where’s My Car? (2000)

Who hasn’t “lost” their car in a parking lot? This all-too-common dilemma is the premise for 84 minutes of adventures. Jesse Montgomery III (Ashton Kutcher) and Chester Greenburg (Seann William Scott) meet cast of colorful characters as they search for their missing car and find plenty of opportunities to toke up along the way.

How High (2001)

How High ups the stoner buddy genre by adding an element of supernatural. Although it might not be the best choice for the superstitious or people prone to paranoia, this film is an engaging tale starring Silas (Method Man) and Jamal (Redman). The pair of home growers use the ashes of their dead friend, Ivory, as fertilizer (definitely not recommended) and conjure his ghost. But the adventure doesn’t end there. With Ivory’s help Silas and Jamal get accepted into sober Harvard.

Harold and Kumar Go to White Castle (2004)

Don’t be surprised if this film brings on a serious case of the munchies. Following in the stoner buddy example of Cheech and Chong, Harold and Kumar go on a journey to White Castle but encounter a few obstacles along the way. The pair meet Neil Patrick Harris and a pack of aggressive raccoons before ending up in a New Jersey jail. Don’t worry, they eventually get their White Castle sliders.
