People take tolerance breaks from consuming weed for a variety of reasons, which can range from something like having a court order if pot is illegal in your state, to just feeling a bit foggy, to wanting to reset your tolerance level so that cannabis is more enjoyable. Whatever your reason, taking a break can be challenging if weed is regular part of your life. Yes, it makes things more interesting, eases muscle pain, stimulates your imagination, chills out anxiety, among other things, but if it gets to be a crutch or starts to take over other priorities, then it might be time to take a break. Here are a few things to practice while you’re taking a break to ensure you get as much out of it as you can.
- Tell your friends. If you’re serious about taking a break, and smoking is something you do socially, let the people closest to you know.
- Get rid of the cannabis you have. Depending on how frequently or how much you like to use weed, cleaning house will help you avoid temptation.
- If you’re a regular smoker, be honest with yourself about how challenging it may be to stop. Marijuana is as addictive as alcohol, although the effects are different. While some is fine in moderation, smoking every day may be analogous to drinking every day. Be aware the restlessness, lack of sleep, anxiety may all be obstacles in stopping for a while, and plan for activities that will counteract what you’re experiencing.
- Exercise. A run, yoga, deep stretches are all healthy ways to release endorphins, same as pot, except you’re getting the added benefit of getting in better shape. It’ll also speed up your metabolism, which will help get rid of trace amounts from your body, if you’re going for longer than 2 weeks. Some time spent on hard cardio will help you sleep too.
- Hydrate. Water helps humans live, so there’s no reason it won’t help clear your mind.
- Get into hobbies. Find cool things to occupy your time, whether that’s film, music, cooking, working out, reading, car-racing, surfing, group sports, etc. Whatever floats your boat.
- Meditate. If you feel like pot calms your mind, try sitting super still for a while and letting go. There are plenty of meditation videos online that can help you do so.
- See your doctor. If you have access to health care, a check-up never hurts. See about the state of your lungs, brain health, blood health, etc.
- Learn how to do something new. A mental challenge can be a great distraction. Learning, and new experiences, are both associated with long-term happiness.
- Get sh*t done! All of the above are good things to do while you’re spending time clear, but one of the benefits of a t-break is that you don’t have the (lovely) impulse to watch Friends for 12 hours straight because it’s not as interesting as it seems when you’re stoned, lol.
